A frequent error among QC inspectors is using a hand magnet to test whether a clamp is manufactured from genuine 304 or 316 austenitic stainless steel. The presence of weak magnetism does not indicate substandard material. Austenitic grades are non-magnetic in their annealed state. However, during the severe plastic deformation required for cold rolling (turning wire and coil into narrow strip bands and pressed housings), a phase transformation occurs where the unstable austenite lattice transforms into a ferromagnetic martensite structure.
To withstand high hoop stresses, hose clamp bands must have high tensile strength and hardness. This can only be achieved via structural cold reduction.
