Most industrial clamps are manufactured using premium grades of stainless steel (including grades 201, 301, 304, and 316). A common market misconception is using magnets to evaluate material quality, assuming that magnetism indicates low-quality carbon steel. The engineering reality is the exact opposite.
Austenitic stainless steels are non-magnetic when soft. However, to achieve the tensile strength and band hardness required for leak-proof clamping, the material must undergo a cold-rolling process. This physical deformation transforms part of the austenitic structure into martensite, which increases material hardness and tensile limits while generating a localized magnetic field. Magnetism, therefore, indicates cold-work strength, not low quality.
High clamping force requires efficient torque transfer during tightening. To prevent thread galling—where raw metal surfaces friction-weld under load—the thread requires proper lubrication.
Our carbon steel plated screws utilize a galvanized zinc layer that acts as a physical lubricant. For stainless steel setups that cannot utilize zinc plating, we apply a specialized wax compound. Because dry storage, long maritime shipping, and hot environments can degrade wax films, we recommend utilizing galvanized screws to maintain long-term thread performance and stable assembly torque values.
