Raw Material Magnetism Demystified

A common misconception in procurement is using magnets to check stainless steel quality—assuming that any magnetic pull means low-grade steel. However, the opposite is true for clamps. Austenitic steels like 201, 301, 304, and 316 are non-magnetic when soft-annealed. Cold deformation alters the microcrystalline structure, creating deformation-induced martensite, which generates a magnetic field. The Role of Lubricating Screws

During tight installation, friction between the screw threads and the housing band can cause galling. In carbon steel screws, the electro-zinc galvanization serves a dual purpose: rust prevention and lubrication. If ungalvanized stainless steel screws are selected, they require synthetic wax compounds as external lubricants. However, transport vibration and thermal cycles can dry out or strip away wax, leading to increased friction and lower clamping efficiency. Therefore, we highly recommend selecting galvanized steel screws or specifically treated dry-lubricated stainless steel screws for optimal performance.
