Many buyers test stainless steel clamps with simple magnets, assuming magnetism indicates low quality. In reality, the opposite is true for stamping operations. While austenitic grades (201, 301, 304, 316) are non-magnetic when soft-annealed, they must undergo cold rolling to meet the tensile strength and hardness requirements of high-performance clamps. This cold working transforms some austenite to martensite, generating a magnetic field. Higher magnetic attraction often reflects the increased tensile properties required for industrial applications.
Screw thread lubrication is critical for converting input tightening torque into band tension. For carbon steel screws, electro-galvanization provides both rust protection and essential thread lubrication. However, for unplated stainless steel screws, wax-based lubricants must be applied. Environmental exposure, heat during transport, and prolonged storage can degrade these wax compounds, reducing their effectiveness. For optimal long-term storage and reliability, we recommend using galvanized steel screws or specialized surface coatings.
Spring-loaded T-bolt clamps are designed to compensate for thermal expansion and contraction in heavy-duty diesel coolant and air charge systems. When installing these clamps, the spring must not be fully compressed. Overtightening the spring to a solid block state prevents it from absorbing thermal changes, which can lead to excessive system pressure, hose damage, and premature joint failure during temperature cycles.
