A common quality inspection misconception is that magnetism indicates poor stainless steel. In truth, austenitic grades like 201, 301, 304, and 316 are non-magnetic after heat-treating. However, to produce clamps and plates capable of surviving massive tensile pressures, the steel must undergo cold rolling. This cold work changes the crystal structure to deformation-induced martensite, making the material significantly harder, stronger, and naturally slightly magnetic. Therefore, magnetism is often proof of high tensile properties and cold-rolled hardening, not defects.
Fastener seizing under high torque can ruin pipeline installations. The zinc plating (galvanization) on DIN 3015 carbon steel screws functions as a vital dry lubricant. In instances where zinc plating is omitted, custom wax compounds are applied to achieve equivalent torque performance. Over time, exposure to high logistics heat or storage humidity can dissipate temporary wax coatings, leading to erratic friction factors.
