Raw Material Magnetism: Myth vs. Reality

Most clamps are made of different grades of stainless steel. Typically, customers use magnets to check material quality, assuming that magnetism indicates lower quality. In reality, the opposite is often true.

Magnetism indicates that the raw material has high hardness and high tensile strength. While austenitic stainless steels (such as 201, 301, 304, and 316) are non-magnetic after heat treatment, the raw materials must meet the required hardness and tensile strength values for heavy-duty clamping. This is achieved via a cold-rolling process that rolls the soft metal into a thin, hardened strip. Cold-rolling changes the crystal structure slightly, creating a magnetic response without reducing corrosion resistance.
