A common industry misconception is that the quality of stainless steel can be measured by testing it with a magnet—assuming magnetic attraction implies a low-grade material. In practice, the opposite is often true. Clamps manufactured from high-quality austenitic stainless steels like 201, 301, 304, and 316 are non-magnetic in their fully annealed state. However, to achieve the necessary hardness, yield strength, and tensile resilience required for tight hose retention, these alloys must undergo extensive cold-rolling processes. This heavy mechanical deformation induces a partial phase transformation from austenite to martensite, introducing magnetic properties. Therefore, magnetism in a finished clamp indicates proper cold-work strengthening rather than inferior material composition.
During the installation process, frictional losses between the screw threads and the clamp housing can severely reduce the conversion of input torque to actual band tension. To counteract this, carbon steel screws utilized in DIN3017 and American-type clamps are typically electro-galvanized (zinc-plated).
