Raw Material Magnetism Demystified

Most high-quality hose clamps are manufactured using premium grades of austenitic stainless steel, such as 201, 301, 304, and 316. A common industry misconception is that magnetism indicates poor steel quality. In practice, the opposite is true. Magnetism indicates raw material strength.

While annealing leaves these steels non-magnetic, manufacturing hose clamps requires high hardness and tensile strength. We meet these requirements via cold rolling, which compresses the soft alloy into hard, thin strips. This cold rolling deformation transforms a portion of the austenite phase into a magnetic martensite phase, producing a magnetic field. Stronger cold working yields higher hardness and increased magnetism.

The galvanized layer on carbon steel screws serves as a solid lubricant, reducing friction during assembly. Most steel screws in DIN3017 clamps are galvanized to maintain this lubricating behavior.

If non-plated screws are used, a wax compound must be applied as a substitute lubricant. However, wax compounds can dry out or rub off during transport and exposure to harsh environments. This loss of lubrication increases thread friction, reducing the clamp's effective radial tightening force for a given torque. Consequently, we recommend galvanized steel screws to ensure consistent installation tension.

Spring-Loaded T-Bolt Clamps for Coolant & Intake Systems

Spring-loaded T-bolt clamps are designed for heavy-duty truck coolant and charge air systems. The spring compensates for the thermal expansion and contraction of the hose connection.

During installation, ensure the spring is not fully compressed. Bottoming out the spring causes two issues: first, the spring becomes a solid spacer, losing its ability to absorb thermal expansion and contraction. Second, as the joint heats up, the hose experiences excessive clamping pressure, which can damage the fitting and shorten the life of the connection.
