Austenitic Cold-Rolling & Raw Material Magnetism

Most industrial steel clamps are manufactured using austenitic stainless steel grades such as 201, 301, 304 (W4), or 316 (W5). A common quality misconception is that if a magnet attracts a clamp, the material is low grade or carbon-contaminated. In industrial manufacturing, the opposite is true.

Raw austenitic stainless steel in its annealed, soft state is non-magnetic. However, to achieve the tensile strength and band hardness required to resist deformation under high torque loads, the raw material must undergo a cold-rolling process. This plastic deformation partially transforms the austenite phase into a martensite phase. While martensite provides the hardness needed for pressure retention, it also introduces magnetic properties. The presence of magnetism is therefore a physical indicator that the strip steel has undergone the mechanical work hardening necessary for fastening applications.

The efficiency of a worm-gear hose clamp depends on the conversion of screw installation torque into band tension. Without proper lubrication, friction between the screw threads and the band slots can cause thread galling, reducing structural tightening efficiency.
