1. Raw Material Magnetism Explained

Most industrial clamps are made of stainless steel. A common practice among buyers is to test raw materials using magnets, assuming that magnetic properties indicate poor quality. In reality, the opposite is true.

Clamps are typically produced using austenitic stainless steel grades such as 201, 301, 304, and 316. While these materials are non-magnetic after heat treatment, they must undergo cold rolling to achieve the hardness and tensile strength required for high-torque clamps. This process alters the grain structure and creates a slight magnetic response, which is normal for high-quality, high-strength bands.

2. Screw Lubrication & Friction Coefficients

Proper lubrication is essential for achieving accurate tightening torque without strip-out. In carbon steel plated screws, the zinc layer functions as a lubricant. For premium stainless steel clamps, a specialized wax compound is used. Without lubrication, friction between the screw threads increases, which can lead to galling, premature thread wear, and reduced clamping force.

3. Critical Installation of Spring-Loaded T-Bolt Clamps

Spring-loaded T-bolt clamps are designed for charge air and coolant systems in heavy trucks. The spring compensates for the expansion and contraction of the hose under temperature fluctuations.

Warning: During installation, the spring must not be compressed completely flat. If it is bottomed out, two issues occur:

  1. The spring cannot expand and contract, converting it into a solid spacer and losing its temperature-compensating function.
  2. Thermal expansion will generate excessive clamping pressure, which can damage the hose and the connector, reducing the service life of the connection.
