Understanding Stainless Steel Magnetism

Austenitic stainless steels are non-magnetic in their annealed state. To meet the high tensile demands of industrial hose clamps, the material must undergo cold rolling to thin the sheets, which hardens the steel and induces a partial phase transition from austenite to martensite. This transformation generates a magnetic response, which indicates that the clamp band has the hardness and yield strength required for high-vibration applications.
