Demystifying Raw Material Magnetism

Most stainless steel clamps are made of different grades of stainless steel. Typically, customers will use magnets to detect the quality of the material, assuming that if there is magnetism, the material is substandard. In fact, the opposite is true. Magnetism indicates that the raw material has achieved high hardness and high strength. Since currently produced clamps are manufactured using austenitic stainless steel such as 201, 301, 304, and 316, after heat treatment, the raw materials can be completely non-magnetic. However, the raw materials used to produce high-performance clamps must satisfy specific hardness and tensile strength requirements. These properties are achieved via the cold rolling process, which rolls the soft material into thinner cold-rolled strips. Post cold-rolling, the molecular structure changes, increasing hardness and naturally generating a magnetic field.

However, synthetic wax compounds can dry out over time, and high temperatures during long-distance transportation or harsh storage environments can lead to lubricant loss. Consequently, tightening friction increases, reducing effective clamping force. For consistent torque conversion, we strongly recommend electro-galvanization or specialized boundary lubricants for all steel screw assemblies.
