Raw Material Magnetism Explained

Many procurement managers test stainless steel clamps with simple hand magnets, assuming magnetism indicates low quality. The opposite is true. Most high-performance spring-band clamps are made from austenitic stainless steels (such as 201, 301, 304, or 316). While pure annealed austenite is non-magnetic, the production of spring-type hose clamps requires high tensile strength and yield performance. This hardness can only be achieved via cold-rolling processes. Cold working induces a martensitic transformation in the steel structure, creating strain-induced magnetic properties.
