Understanding Material Magnetism, Fastener Lubrication, and Spring-Loaded Compensators
Many buyers incorrectly assume that magnetism indicates inferior stainless steel. The opposite is often true. Clamps made of austenitic stainless steel grades (201, 301, 304, 316) can be non-magnetic in their annealed state. However, to meet required hardness and tensile strengths, strips must undergo cold rolling. This physical deformation transforms some austenite phase into martensite, introducing magnetic properties as a natural byproduct of increased strength.
In DIN3017 clamps, the galvanized layer on carbon steel screws plays a vital dual role as both a corrosion barrier and a solid lubricant. When tightening stainless steel fasteners, friction can lead to thread galling and seizure. If zinc plating is omitted, dry wax compounds are required. However, wax can degrade during transit or in high-temperature environments. We recommend galvanized steel screws to maintain consistent installation torque.
Used in heavy truck engine coolants and turbo charge-air pipes, spring-loaded T-bolt clamps adapt to thermal expansion and contraction. During installation, avoid bottoming out the spring coil. If the spring is fully compressed, it loses its ability to flex, behaving like a solid spacer. This risks over-pressurizing the hose during thermal cycles, which can damage the fitting and shorten connection life.
