Many procurement teams use simple magnets to inspect stainless steel quality, assuming magnetism indicates an inferior grade. In pipeline clamp engineering, the opposite is true. Clamps are manufactured from high-tensile austenitic stainless steel (such as 201, 301, 304, and 316). While fully annealed raw materials are non-magnetic, they lack the hardness required to prevent strip deformation under high installation torque. Meeting high mechanical specifications requires cold-rolling, which restructures the internal grain matrix, increasing mechanical strength and generating a harmless residual magnetic field.
Screw thread friction consumes up to 90% of the torque applied during installation, leaving only 10% to generate actual radial clamping force. To maintain consistent torque-to-tension conversion, carbon steel screws are galvanized, which functions as a dry lubricant layer. Stainless steel screws require specialized wax coatings to prevent thread galling under load.
